Homemade Fried Donuts

Ingredients:

For the Donuts:

  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
For Frying:

  • Vegetable oil
For Coating:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1-2 teaspoons ground cinnamon (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast:

    • In a bowl, combine warmed milk, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. Mix the Dough:

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
    • Add the activated yeast mixture, eggs, and softened butter to the flour. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough:

    • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-8 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise:

    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours or until it doubles in size.
  5. Roll and Cut:

    • Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/2-inch thickness.
    • Cut out donut shapes using a donut cutter or two round cutters (one larger for the outer circle and one smaller for the center).

  6. Second Rise:

    • Place the cut-out donuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover with a damp cloth and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  7. Heat Oil:

    • Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Fry the Donuts:

    • Carefully place the donuts in the hot oil, frying for about 1-2 minutes per side or until golden brown.
    • Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried donuts to a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil.
  9. Coat the Donuts:

    • In a bowl, combine granulated sugar (and cinnamon if using). While the donuts are still warm, coat them in the sugar mixture.
  10. Serve and Enjoy:

    • Serve the homemade fried donuts warm and enjoy!
Feel free to get creative with additional toppings like glazes, chocolate, or sprinkles. Homemade fried donuts are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for a day or two.
