Homemade Fried Donuts
Ingredients:
For the Donuts:- 1 cup whole milk, warmed
- 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
For Frying:For Coating:- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1-2 teaspoons ground cinnamon (optional)
Instructions:
- Activate the Yeast:
- In a bowl, combine warmed milk, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Mix the Dough:- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
- Add the activated yeast mixture, eggs, and softened butter to the flour. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the Dough:
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-8 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- First Rise:
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours or until it doubles in size.
- Roll and Cut:
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/2-inch thickness.
- Cut out donut shapes using a donut cutter or two round cutters (one larger for the outer circle and one smaller for the center).
Second Rise:- Place the cut-out donuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover with a damp cloth and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Heat Oil:
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the Donuts:
- Carefully place the donuts in the hot oil, frying for about 1-2 minutes per side or until golden brown.
- Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried donuts to a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil.
- Coat the Donuts:
- In a bowl, combine granulated sugar (and cinnamon if using). While the donuts are still warm, coat them in the sugar mixture.
