Ingredients:
For the Topping:- 4-5 medium-sized apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
For the Cake Batter:- 1 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
Instructions:
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a round cake pan with butter and line the bottom with parchment paper.
- Prepare the Topping:
- In a saucepan, melt 1/2 cup of butter over medium heat.
- Add brown sugar and cinnamon to the melted butter, stirring until the sugar is dissolved.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared cake pan, spreading it evenly.
- Arrange the sliced apples over the caramel mixture.
Prepare the Cake Batter:- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined.
- Assemble the Cake:
- Pour the batter over the arranged apples in the cake pan, spreading it evenly.
- Bake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cooling and Inverting:
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10-15 minutes.
- Place a serving plate upside down over the cake pan and, using oven mitts, carefully invert the cake onto the plate. Be cautious as the caramel may still be hot.
Serve:- Allow the inverted apple cake to cool completely before serving.
